The Indianapolis 500, more commonly known as the Indy 500 is the annual 500-mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway nested in an Indianapolis suburb named for the track, Speedway, Indiana. Always on Memorial Day weekend, the 2022 event will take place on Sunday, May 29 starting at 12:30 p.m. ET.

It’s been a long time since the Indy 500 has sold out, but this year’s running of the greatest spectacle in racing isn’t expected to have an empty seat. That’s because fans haven’t had a chance to witness the race for years, as the pandemic has caused an array of issues.

The 500's history has also led to a host of distinctive traditions, from the massive Borg Warner trophy full of sculptures of past champions' faces, to the winner being presented with a full pint of milk as a victory gift. Off-track, many of the drivers stay at the circuit in motorhomes and play increasingly elaborate pranks on one another (this year's highlight involved an inflatable hot tub).

In 2020, the race didn’t take place until late August, the first time it wasn’t held around the Memorial Day holiday—and no spectators were allowed. Last year, attendance was capped at 40%, roughly 135,000 fans. This weekend, though, the grandstands will be full.

Often referred to as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indy 500 is part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport in INDY CAR RACING alongside the MONACO GRAND PRIX (also May 29, 2022) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (Jun 11-12, 2022). The big event also immediately follows the NASCAR 600 qualifying event in North Carolina at the Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 28 at 7 p.m. ET. In fact, there’s a lot of racing HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND.

It's almost time for one of the most thrilling races of the calendar year.

The 106th running of the 500-mile race is one of the most historic races in auto racing and promises to deliver excitement once again.

Get the milk ready, here's everything to know about the 2021 Indianapolis 500.

While everyone loves to guess who might come away victorious in The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, all eyes will be on Helio Castroneves, as he will try and make history at The Brickyard. The Brazilian driver kissed the bricks in 2021, marking the fourth time he has won the Indy 500 in his career. That tied him with the legends A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser. Castroneves will look to become the first driver to win the race five times, 21 years after his first victory.

To say that Scott Dixon has put 32 problems behind him is one way to look at starting from the pole position for the Indianapolis 500. It's a nice position to be in as it means you start in command of the race and clean air in front of you, if you can hold off the other two cars starting on the front row with you.

However, the Indy 500 is not just about pure speed. It's an endurance race, with ever-changing strategies and conditions, that tests the drivers and their teams at every chance it can. It is a race where a mistake can be made and you can still somehow end up in Victory Lane, or never recover from and wonder what could have been.

Each of the last six winners will be competing in the race on Sunday, including Japan’s Takuma Sato, who won the race in 2017 and 2020. Current IndyCar Series points leader Will Power is looking to win the big race for the second time in his career, as he took home the checkered flag in 2018.

The 2008 Indy 500 winner is this year's favorite after his 4-lap run of 234.046 mph, the second-fastest qualifying effort in race history. His five pole starts are one behind the record established by Rick Mears.

When does the Indy 500 start?

The green flag will drop on the 2022 Indy 500 at 12:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 29. But there are plenty of other events that are nearly as exciting for fans.

9:00 a.m. ET – Cars pushed to pit lane

11:47 a.m. ET – Driver introductions

12:38 p.m. ET – Drivers start their engines

What network is airing the 2022 Indy 500?

NBC will begin pre-race coverage at 11 a.m., and the broadcast will run through 4 p.m. It will be aired simultaneously on Universo and the Peacock streaming service (which will also host a post-race show for premium subscribers).

Can I watch the 2022 Indy 500 online?

Absolutely! Here are a few options:

NBC’s streaming service will have the most comprehensive coverage. You can get a seven-day free trial, followed by a $5 or $10 monthly charge. (The free version of Peacock does not include live sports.)

Fubo TV

This sports-focused cord-cutting service carries NBC in most markets. There's a seven-day free trial, followed by monthly charges of $65–$80, depending on the channels you choose.

Can I watch the 2022 Indy 500 for free?

That depends, somewhat, on where you live. After two years without blackouts, the race will not be available to people in the Indianapolis area again starting this year. Everyone else, though, can watch for free with a good HD antenna.

The Indy 500 will be broadcast by NBC—meaning you've got a good chance of capturing the game over the air, which costs nothing beyond the equipment prices. Be sure to test the antenna in multiple locations in your home to find the most reliable signal.
