The 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 is a big deal, and not just because it’s IndyCar’s biggest race of the year. For the first time since 2019, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be open at full capacity, and fans are expected to turn up in droves for the festivities on Sunday, May 29 (5/29/2022).
The 2022 Indy 500 is here, and Helio Castroneves is looking to make history during the biggest day on the racing calendar.
Castroneves is starting 27th of the 33 drivers in the field, so he will have to win from the back of the pack. That said, he wasn't expected to contend for the race win last year but ended up taking the checkered flag. Perhaps fortune will be on his side again.
Of course, catching the likes of Scott Dixon, Alex Palou, Rinus VeeKay and the other drivers situated near the front of the race won't be easy. Still, Castroneves' pursuit of a fifth Indy 500 victory will be one of the many great stories on display at the race.
After Scott Dixon broke the record for fastest pole-qualifying speed last weekend and combined with Alex Palou and Rinus VeeKay for the fastest front row in Indy 500 history, there's a chance the race's record speed could be broken Sunday as well. And as it turns out, that record was set last year by Helio Castroneves, who will be chasing more history on Sunday.
Castroneves won the 2021 Indy 500 with an average winning speed of 190.690 mph, blowing away the 187.433 mph average posted by 2013 winner Tony Kanaan. And that win put Castroneves in one of racing’s most illustrious clubs. He joined A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears as the only drivers to win the 500 four times. Can Castroneves go back-to-back and stake his claim as the best driver in Indy history?
