Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic can setup their French Open Quarterfinal clash if they can get past Felix Auger-Aliassime and Diego Schwartzman in the round of 16 at Roland Garros. Jakub Bobro: Since his first-round stumble against Juan Pablo Varillas, Auger-Aliassime has been great, especially in his third-round clash against Filip Krajinovic. The 21-year-old took it in three tight sets and has now reached the second week at all four slams. Nadal has been absolutely ruthless, yet to drop more than four games in a set here, most recently beating Botic Van De Zandschulp. Auger-Aliassime will be Nadal’s biggest challenge yet but unless he shows something special, it is tough to see an upset. Nadal in 4

Damian Kust: An interesting clash between the two proteges of Toni Nadal, although Felix Auger-Aliassime’s coach said he won’t be in his box during this one and won’t help him find the tactics to beat his nephew. Thankfully for the Canadian, he’s watched enough of Rafael Nadal over the years to know what he should be doing. However, that’s what all the opponents of the Spaniard in Paris thought and almost all of them failed. Nadal’s foot hasn’t been acting up yet and he’s kept the matches short, which screams trouble for Auger-Aliassime. Nadal in 4

Jakub: Djokovic continues to be stellar, only losing more than three games in a set once in nine sets at this Roland Garros so far. Schwartzman allowed Grigor Dimitrov just six games in their third-round match, though the 0-6 head-to-head with the Serb means we should not expect a particularly even match. Djokovic in 3

Damian: Diego Schwartzman is certainly capable of troubling Novak Djokovic, but beating him in the best-of-five format seems very tough. What doesn’t help is that the Serbian has been immaculate so far, not dropping a set and never really looking as if he was in trouble. He’s never lost to Schwartzman before and I seriously doubt this will be the first time. Djokovic in 4

Rafael Nadal vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime

“I don’t know if I need insight on how Rafa plays, to be honest,” Auge- Aliassime said with a laugh on Friday, when he was asked if his coach, Toni Nadal, would give him any tips on how to beat his nephew. “I think we all know what he does well.”

Auger Aliassime says that Toni will watch this fourth-round encounter from a “neutral place,” and just “enjoy the match.” Will FAA enjoy his experience, too? After a two-month slide, he’s back on the track that took him to the US Open semifinals last year, and the Australian Open quarterfinals this year. Auger-Aliassime played some spectacular tennis in a loss to Novak Djokovic in Rome two weeks ago, and he took care of a potentially tough opponent in Filip Krajinovic in the third round in Paris. Whenever that match got tight, Auger-Aliassime played more aggressively and more effectively.

Still, as FAA says, we all know that Rafa is in another class. The Spaniard won their only meeting, in two sets in Madrid in 2019. Auger-Aliassime says he’s a different player now, and that’s true. His serve is a big weapon, his return has improved, and he does a better job of moving around his backhand to hit as many forehands as he can.

But therein lies the problem for him in this matchup: Rafa’s lefty serve and forehand are tough to run around, which means FAA will probably have to hit more backhands than he wants. Advantage Rafa. Winner: Nadal

THE LOWDOWN

FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME

World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime has come a long way from almost losing a poor match to Peruvian qualifier Juan Pablo Varillas in the first round. A straight-sets victory over in-form Filip Krajinovic is a string result on clay, a surface the Canadian is still improving on under the tutelage of supercoach Toni Nadal. Auger-Aliassime won his first ATP title at the Rotterdam Open back in February but nine runners-up placings so far is a stat that suggests he still lacks a killer instinct required to push into the top five, as does his excellent but predictable five-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open earlier this season.
