About The Harvard Crimson's
Summer Journalism Academy

The Harvard Crimson's Summer Journalism Academy offers high school students the opportunity to learn from current Crimson staff and dive deep into the ins and outs of running an independent newspaper. SJA teaches students the fundamentals of journalism—article writing, best reporting practices, and even revenue generation—while providing insight on college journalism through current Crimson editors.

Over the course of the program, attendees will have exclusive access to presentations and workshops led by all the different Crimson Boards, from News and Editorial to Art and Multimedia. At the end of this highly interactive program, students will have developed a comprehensive journalism portfolio, which can then be submitted for consideration to competitions or as part of their college applications. Students will also get to hear from current Harvard undergraduates about the college applications process and ask for help as they navigate their own admissions journey.

VIRTUAL

For the first week, virtual attendees will participate in presentations, seminars, and panels from both Crimson Editors and professional journalists. The week will culminate in a group presentation of a pitch for an original journalistic piece.

HYBRID

Hybrid attendees will participate in all virtual content for the first week. Over the course of the second week, they will develop their pitch idea into a finished journalistic article. Participants will have the opportunity to shadow Crimson Editors in the historical 14P building, practice their in-person reporting skills around the Cambridge area, and collaborate with talented peers to produce a polished, publishable article.

Summer Journalism Academy is always one of the most exciting times of the year here at the Crimson, and we encourage all passionate writers to apply for this transformative educational experience!

WHAT STUDENTS SAY

It was an amazing experience, and I learned so many skills that I will bring back to my school paper. The panels were so wonderful in getting to know the professional world of journalism and providing us with exposure to many different forms of writing.
